Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Overview

Located at 1375 Panda Avenue, Chenghua district, Chengdu, Sichuan province, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is a world-renowned giant panda conservation and research center. It is 10 kilometers from downtown Chengdu and about 30 kilometers from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. As a key ecological demonstration project for the relocation and conservation of giant pandas, it is also a popular destination for public education and eco-tourism.

Established on the foundation of panda breeding and care at the Chengdu Zoo, the research base continues to play a leading role in panda protection and scientific research.

Expansions and Facilities

The base's design mimics the pandas' natural habitat through landscaped areas, which include panda nurseries, feeding zones, research centers, and a panda hospital. Luxurious "panda villas" are scattered throughout the mountainous forests. The expansion area retains the original terrain and incorporates mountain valleys, streams and multi-level landscapes. The project is divided into several distinct areas based on the panda's ecological needs. By the end of 2020, the panda population reached 215, making it the largest captive breeding group of giant pandas in the world.

Awards and Recognition

In 1995, the Chengdu Panda Base received the "Global 500" award from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). In 2006, it was rated as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
